For the fourth year running, KinderCare Education has teamed up with the Portland Trail Blazers for Read Big – a program with the goal to get kids reading. Last week, Read Big held an assembly at King Elementary School in Portland to celebrate rock star readers.
Blazers point guard Shabazz Napier and mascot Blaze the Trail Cat led the assembly to get kids pumped up about reaching their reading goals. Two outstanding readers from King were invited to read Blazers trivia in front of their classmates. The energy in the room was undeniable as kids shouted out what they thought were Shabazz and Blaze’s favorite foods. Turns out, Blaze eats Lakers fans for breakfast. Shabazz prefers spaghetti and meatballs.
At the end of the assembly, King Elementary Principal Jill Sage received a basketball signed by the Blazers in recognition of her school’s participation in the program.
The event emphasized how excited kids can be about reading, and underscored the importance of encouraging them to read as much as possible.
“Our partnership with the Blazers helps us reach so many more families and children with our message of literacy,” said Senior Vice President of HR Kelsey Troy. “Read Big spreads the love of reading to children all over the state.”
Through Read Big, kids are encouraged to read books, magazines, and articles that interest them and record them in a reading log. Kids who read and log their reading throughout the school year win tickets to a Blazers game.
At KCE, we believe that helping children to develop a love of reading at an early age in invaluable to their success later in life. We’re thrilled to partner with the Blazers to spread the love of reading to all children!
