The Champions afterschool program at Coral Academy-Windmill Elementary in Henderson, Nev., had a special guest last week. State Senator Joyce Woodhouse stopped by the site to celebrate Lights On Afterschool, an annual event highlighting the importance of afterschool learning programs like Champions.

Senator Woodhouse got the full Champions experience.

“She was treated to a tour by Champions students,” said Jill Brown, licensing and compliance advisor for Knowledge Universe. “They were so excited to take selfies with her and ask her questions about what it is like to be State Senator.”

Senator Woodhouse talked to Champions students about her political experience.

Sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance, Lights On Afterschool celebrates afterschool learning programs, which impact more than 10 million students nationwide. As demand for these programs grow, programs like Champions will need to grow too, to accommodate. Support from law makers and politicians is vital to nurturing afterschool learning opportunities.

Each year, Champions participates in Lights On Afterschool.

“The purpose is to shine a light on the importance of quality afterschool care,” said Brown. “It’s a nationwide event, and it focuses on just how significant these programs are to children, families, and communities.
