A record number of Knowledge Universe employees laced up their sneakers, shouldered a backpack, and joined their colleagues for the eighth annual March to Beach – KU’s signature community event in which employees deliver backpacks full of school supplies to students at Beach Elementary.
More than 300 NSC employees participated in this year’s event – a record number. Collectively they handed out backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, crayons, and more to each of the 625 students at Beach. KU employees also donated an additional $12,000 worth of school supplies from the August Color Wars along with funds for the school library to purchase new math and science books.
“March to Beach is our annual back-to-school tradition,” said Tom Wyatt, Knowledge Universe CEO. “We are committed to supporting the students of our community, and we want to ensure that all students, no matter their socioeconomic background, begin the school year with everything they need for academic success. That’s why we do all we can to get students the supplies the need to be ready to learn, and why we gather as a company to deliver the supplies children need to start the year ready to learn.”
KU partners with local nonprofit Schoolhouse Supplies for the annual March to Beach. Schoolhouse Supplies operates Oregon’s only Free Store for Teachers, which allows educators to “shop” for supplies for their classrooms.
“We know that so many teachers use their own money to purchase supplies for their classrooms, and it is our hope that [KU’s] donation gives them the supplies they need to teach without spending their own hard-earned money,” said Wyatt.
Throughout the past 10 years Schoolhouse Supplies’ programs provided backpacks and supplies to more than 114,000 students in Portland schools.
