In the heat of last week’s Color Wars (part of this year’s lead up to the annual company picnic), NSC employees in Portland set a new record by collecting 4,400 school supplies for community partner Schoolhouse Supplies—the largest single donation in the company’s history.
On Thursday, August 13, glue sticks, markers, pencils, crayons, and more were arranged into elaborate camp-themed dioramas in the spirit of the Color Wars. Special judges from Schoolhouse Supplies, including mascot Pencil Pete, assessed teams’ dioramas based on design aesthetic, number of supplies, and team spirit.
Schoolhouse Supplies is an award-winning nonprofit that supports public education in Portland by giving students and teachers free classroom supplies, donated by companies like Knowledge Universe. Schoolhouse Supplies also operates Oregon’s only volunteer-run Free Store for Teachers, which is stocked with school supplies donated by the community. Teachers in the Portland area have the opportunity several times per year to visit the Free Store to gather supplies for their classroom; ensuring teachers and students have the tools they need.
“It is so exciting to be able to provide school supplies to teachers and students in our community,” said Joelle Latcu, manager of Travel, Meetings, and Community Partnerships. “It was fun to work together and make such an impact through the Color Wars.”
Knowledge Universe partners with Schoolhouse Supplies each year to donate supplies and backpacks to Beach Elementary School through March to Beach.
Thanks to the competitive “Color Warriors” at the NSC, students and teachers will be able to go back to school this fall with everything they need to start the year ready to learn.
