Tour de Force: Back from Academy, ready to (en)roll

Center directors returned from the June Academies with a fresh perspective on how they, and their staff, can best showcase their centers to prospective families.

Center directors returned from the June Academies with a fresh perspective on how they, and their staff, can best showcase their centers to prospective families.

In June, more than 1,600 center directors and field leaders participated in the CD Academy.

“I came back energized,” said Lea Gombar, CD of Kildare Farm KinderCare in Cary, NC.

The Academy took an interactive approach, using role-playing, games, and a purple cow to practice relationship-building skills so more families choose to enroll. Lea returned ready to revamp her tours. Here’s her plan.

Seek to understand
Before Academy
During tours, Lea tended to focus on giving new families facts and information rather than making an emotional connection with them.

Tour de force
Taking time to ask open-ended questions and listen – before walking a family through the center – is now part of her tour plan. She’s committed to understanding who each family is and sharing who she is in a personal way.

Share what’s truly remarkable
Before Academy
Lea always told families that she was proud of her teachers – but she never explained why.

Tour de force
She has new language to talk about her greatest asset. “What really sets us apart is that we are all passionate teachers who are dedicated to your children’s future. We are constantly striving to exceed your expectations every day.”

Let your teachers really shine
Before Academy
Teachers did take part in tours, but not as much as they could have.

Tour de force
Teachers will have starring roles: Families really want to spend time with their child’s classroom teacher. “I have many successful teachers who know the answers to families’ questions and concerns,” says Lea. “I want to empower them to give these answers.”
